I just wanted to say a big thank you to yourself, Einar and everybody involved with Saga Oseberg for all your help in the recent filming for our documentary series VIKING DEAD.
As you know, it’s the second time I have been to Tonsberg to film documentaries about the Oseberg – and I’m pleased to say that the episode will be broadcast in the UK (UKTV Yesterday Channel) Scandinavia (ViaSat) and around the world next year, 2018.
Let me say that in my opinion the quayside setting for Saga Oseberg’s ship reconstruction in Tonsberg is an extremely attractive environment for film makers and for people involved in the history and heritage of ship building and the Viking period in Norway. To me it is a unique asset to the City of Tonsberg, for even the famous Vikingeskibsmuseet at Roskilde in Denmark does not have such an open and accessible heritage attraction. While we filmed this year (and also I remember back on my first fiming trip in 2010) tourists, locals, children and enthusiasts of all ages were able to enjoy the location, observing the painstaking building of the ships, learning about the techniques and skills that are required – and all the time being immersed in Scandinavian heritage and history.
During the filming of the VIKING DEAD series through 2017 we have researched and filmed at locations in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia and all over the UK – and I can honestly say that the waterfront attraction created by yourself, Einar and everybody at Saga Oseberg is in a class of its own and in my view it would be to the detriment the City of Tonsberg if it were not allowed to continue, develop and flourish. It would be, in my opinon, an extremely retrograde step to hide away at some less accessible location the fantastic craftsmanship and endeavours of the Viking ship builders. Where else in the world can you see this kind of work, openly accessible?
I understand that the replica of the Klastad ship is to be launched next year – and that a replica of the world famous Gokstad ship is being planned – both of these are potential MAJOR events in terms of the international heritage and tourism industry – and if marketed NOW would prove an extremely powerful draw as part of the Scandinavian and Viking heritage attraction of Tonsberg and Norway in a wider sense. I know this because I have recently visited a significant number of Scandinavian and Viking heritage attractions and heritage locations! From a personal point of view I can’t wait to see next year’s plans come to fruition in Tonsberg.
If there is anything I can do to assist in terms of the promotion of Tonsberg and the Viking ship reconstructions, I am more than happy to do so. As I’ve said, our series reaches a large audience (it is currently broadcast in 92 countries!) so your work will receive due exposure next year when VIKING DEAD premieres.

I feel that your efforts at Tonsberg should be high applauded as it is a remarkable and a very important historical site. To have the Saga Oseberg ship and the construction yard in its present location must be a valuable resource for the local community and I only wish that we had similar like-mind individuals and organisations with such commitment here at York as we also highly value our Viking heritage. Surely it must bring in large numbers of visitors to the local community, especially those, like us, who want to marvel at the work being undertaken there. I feel it is one of the most important archaeological reconstruction sites in Norway as it adds to the history and atmosphere of such an iconic collection of archaeological evidence. It would surely be detrimental to the local economy and infrastructure if it were to be moved elsewhere. Personally, I really valued my all too short stay in Tonsberg and will cherish the memories of the place and the people, who work there, for the rest of my life. I cannot over estimate how important I feel your work at the site is to people, like myself, who value and wish to learn more about this fascinating period of Norwegian culture.
I wish you all the best in the future and only hope that one day I will return to see how it is all progressing.
