IMPORTANT LINK ESTABLISHED IN THE HARBOR

Most of our boatbuilders have taken a few weeks’ break from the Gokstad ship to instead focus on connecting the walkway at the Coastal Culture Center with the reconstructed Tønsberg Ropewalk.

An important part of the “harbor circuit” promenade is now in place, as the new walkway is officially opened by Mayor Frank Pedersen on Tuesday, June 17. Once fully completed, visitors will be able to walk car-free along piers and paths from bridge to bridge—from the Canal Bridge to the pedestrian bridge on both sides. This is a key element of the project “The Canal as Urban Space”, which will contribute to a positive transformation of the entire harbor area. The project is a major step toward reclaiming the waterfront for the benefit of the public.

A Challenging Project

OVA’s construction manager, Jan Vogt Knutsen, explains that connecting the two walkways has been relatively complex. “Hardly a single angle is straight, and there are many slopes, several levels, and some twisting. So, it’s been both challenging and fun to work on.”

Under Jan’s leadership, OVA’s boatbuilders are becoming quite experienced in building walkways, thanks to this project and the earlier major development at Vikingodden. Projects like these represent welcome variation—as well as welcome income—for the continued development of Vikingodden.
