Not everyone knows about the ancient Iron Age grave hidden in the forest at Karlsvika. It is likely from somewhere between the years 500 and 1000, though it could be even older.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The burial cairn at Karlsvika, near T\u00f8nsberg, is situated on a high, prominent spot and is visible from the sea. Perhaps a local chieftain or another prominent figure was buried here between 1,000 and 1,500 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cairn was restored by Vestfold County Municipality in 1995, when displaced stones were retrieved and placed back in position. The original height of the burial mound is unknown, so the restoration only reconstructed it to the height measurable before the work began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area around the burial cairn offers pleasant opportunities for hiking and enjoying nature, with a touch of ancient history as an added bonus. Previously, there was an informational sign at the site, but unfortunately, it is no longer there. A more durable sign would be a welcome addition. The area is popular among hikers, but it\u2019s easy to pass by without realizing what you\u2019re looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\"en_GB\"\/<\/a>\n\n\n
